The gratitude or sincere appreciation is a positive emotion in acknowledging a favor or benefit that one has received or will receive. It means thankfulness, noticing simple pleasures, counting your blessings and acknowledging everything that you receive asked or unasked. When you express gratitude you share something special. Gratitude builds humility as we recognize an act of kindness, service, or caring from someone else. It is not the results of things that happens to us; but an attitude we cultivate by practice.
Gratitude and spirituality
Gratitude have a special place in spiritual or holistic life. It helps in purifying manomaya kosha (mind sheath). Gratitude is also one of the precepts laid by Dr. Mikao Usui in reiki. It opens the door to the abundance, happiness and divine bliss that you desire and deserve. When we sincerely express gratitude, our VIBRATIONAL FREQUENCY RISES and we are in flow with cosmic laws. When gratitude is a part of your life style, it allows you to bring into your conscious awareness the good things that are happening in your life daily and thus help in developing positive thinking. Often instead of rejoicing in what we have, we greedily want something more (that may even may not be useful or required really), better, or different. We forget to first say thanks for whatever we are given unasked. Gratitude OPENS our HEART chakra and make us more open minded.
Sometimes the greatest cause for gratitude lies concealed in the challenges we face in our life, for they help us more stronger and more compassionate. In spirituality we are often taught to always remember and be thankful to God even in times of crisis. Gratitude releases detrimental patterns in our subconscious mind and opens doors to the source of love and joy. Gratitude becomes your prayer. It increases our awareness and raises our consciousness.
Scientific research on gratitude
In a paper published by Alex M. Wood at UK, it has been mentioned that people who are more grateful have higher levels of well-being. Grateful people are MORE HAPPIER, less depressed, less stressed, and more content with their lives and social relationships. Grateful people sleep better, and this seems to be because they think less negative and more positive thoughts just before going to sleep. Grateful people also have less negative coping strategies, being less likely to try to avoid the problem, blame themselves, deny there is a problem or cope through substance use. They also have higher levels of control of their environments, purpose in life, PERSONAL GROWTH and SELF ACCEPTANCE. They have more positive ways of coping with the difficulties they experience in life, being more likely to seek support from other people, reinterpreted and grow from the experience, and spend more time planning how to deal with the problem. Gratitude not only heals but rejuvenates the body. Learn to be grateful towards your body organs and see the miracle.
Gratitude opens the door to abundance
We often overlook or underestimate the small things in our life. But when practicing gratitude you will find that the more willing you are to be grateful for the small things in your life, the bigger things will show up in your life and that too at unexpected time and sources. When you express gratitude for the people and things you have in your life from your heart, you naturally become tuned to the vibrations of abundance. When we give gratitude to life, life gives back to us. When we express gratitude, we draw to us people and situations to be grateful for.
Gratitude helps build a healthy relationship
When you truly appreciate and express your feelings of gratitude for others it brings smile on their faces. It sends a silent message to them that you love and respect them (which bolster their self-esteem). Gratitude increases your willingness and capacity to give. In time you will start sharing your love and joy with everyone and that too without expectation of something in return. It is our gratitude that gives real value to any gift. Love and gratitude loves each others company. Gratitude is a natural expression of a loving heart.
Gratitude changes the state of mind
What we feel and believe at any instant of time we attract it into our life. When in sad mood we are creating more trouble for us and it becomes very important for us to learn to change our mood. The gratitude is one of the tools we can use for this purpose. When you count all the love and thins you are receiving and often unasked, you shift your attention from sadness to happiness. Gratitude replaces sense of loss by love and joy. When you cherish your past friends and memories, express your gratitude towards them you are raising your consciousness and changing your state of mind. With gratitude in heart, no matter what is happening with us and around us, we can decide to respond in a way that will help us learn and grow.

Gratitude shift your focus from what you do not have to what you have and therefore initiates feelings of contentment and happiness. It prevents you from ruining your present.
Gratitude subdues ego
Whenever you give something to others in one or other form, it is your ego who wants something in return. In spirituality it is said that ‘giving is receiving’ and ‘receiving is giving’. The true feelings and emotions for giving something to some come from your spiritual nature, your higher-self. Our life is a journey from ego to spirit and gratitude helps us in discovering our true nature.
Gratitude heals past; turns negative into positive
It becomes difficult to be grateful in times of difficulty. Negative experiences change our belief system. When you look back at any very unpleasant past experience and meditate, you will find that experience proved to be a turning point in your life. It made you stronger; you developed more understanding and awareness about life. You learned a lesson that will help you for your whole life. You now realize that there is always more going on than we are aware of in any situation. It becomes easy for you to now forgive and in-fact you are grateful to your past.
Now after learning to be grateful, you with a grateful heart can see the best in every situation and every people you happen to meet, and give your best. Gratitude changes the way we view life, people and ourselves. Unpleasant people and situations now begin to transform into pleasant and beneficial things. You now know that it was blessing in disguise. Challenges are what makes life interesting, overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.
Gratitude builds positive self-esteem
Learning to be grateful about yourself, your abilities is an art. We can be thankful that we have the energy, conviction and strength to stand for what we believe. Being grateful to you bring into your awareness your positive qualities, your love and appreciation for yourself. It brings a state of self acceptance and growth. Gratitude sharps our creative intelligence. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done, and reward yourself with something you love for example a pizza party etc. Appreciating yourself makes your mind, body and heart happy, charged and ready for the next step ahead !
Gratitude builds powerful personality
The human is selective by nature. For example when we go to buy T-shirt, we look for the best for us. Similarly if we form a habit of imbibing good habits of others and rejecting bad in them, then this practice will finally make us a powerful person. A person with excellent habits, life style, thinking etc. We must be grateful for people because they help us grow.
The gratitude is one of the life most important lessons. Recall in retrospect that our parent taught us to say “Thank you” whenever somebody gave something to us. It was a sign of respect, good manners and we do not have true feelings of gratefulness. But true gratefulness is when it comes from your inner core, your heart. You really feel good about others. Your gratitude is now an expression of your love and affection. When you have a grateful heart ideas will automatically come into your mind. You will begin to see everything as divine miracle and you will find uncountable things to be grateful about. If you like you can start maintaining a book called “gratitude book” or “book of love” or “book of abundance” whatever you call it in which you will be writing things that you are grateful for today. Extend your range for gratitude to more and more life situations.
